For my birthday back in March we agreed to take a trip to Port Fairy, somewhere we had not visited for quite some time. We decided to break the journey down by stopping overnight in Geelong at the Mercure Hotel. We had a lovely day and did a bit of shopping at the end of season sales. Trying to arrange where to go for dinner that night was made even more difficult with many places being booked out.
However we finally went for an early meal at the Belmont Hotel and were thrilled with all the food we ate, what a great last minute choice.
Our intention was to go to Port Fairy from Geelong the quickest way, however the receptionist at the Mercure convinced us to take the Great Ocean Road and enjoy the sights on such a beautiful day.
Travelling along the Great Ocean Road there are plenty of ocean views and the road winds in and around the coastline, sometimes with quite sharp bends. We were fortunate for most of our trip and did not get stuck behind a bus, there is definitely no room for overtaking. There was however a couple of places we had buses in front, fortunately most of the drivers were considerate and pulled over when possible for traffic to get past.
We took a very welcome break at Port Campbell and went for a little walk and toilet break.
To get the best advantage of some of the “12 Apostles” you can walk a short distance to the lookouts. Being such a lovely day this was very pleasant and made for good pictures.
There are plenty of beautiful beach views with no one on them. To get to most of these beaches you have quite a steep walk down, and of course back up.
London Bridge is one of the remaining “12 Apostles” showing parts of the cliff being eroded by the rough weather conditions it is subjected to.
Whilst going through Warrnambool we decided to stop at Cheese World and check it out.
You can check out some of the old farming and dairy equipment that was used. We managed to purchase some great cheeses and biscuits so that we could enjoy them when settled in Port Fairy.
After a few initial glitches with the accommodation at Moyne Wharf Appartments in Port Fairy we were finally settled and it was a very pleasant place to stay.
We found a lovely restaurant to have dinner called Portofino and the food was really fantastic.
Overall we had a lovely time away in Port Fairy for my birthday and enjoyed some lovely meals. May be we won’t wait so long next time before we head down that way again.
